Mark Johnston was born in Stockton on Tees in 1974. He studied at Newcastle College of Art 1991, Cumbria College 1992-93 and at Brighton University, where he gained his BA, 1993-96.
Mark’s paintings are rooted in landscape, drawing on and reflecting expected influences including Turner together with the Dutch School and the exploration of mood, atmosphere as well as a sense of place.
The surfaces of the paintings, however, reveal their true meaning and intention and allows us an insight into the nature of the artist himself.
His creative process has a lot in common with the painterly expression of Willem de Kooning and action-painting. The electricity imbued onto the surfaces by his energetic handwriting of layered marks and glazes reveals a dynamism and physicality that tells us more about landscape than mere appearance.
They are full of forces and gravity; landscapes brought to life.
